07-Ghost episodes 1-9 Review

A couple of weeks ago I downloaded an app on my phone so I could watch anime while signing up for my college classes (which always seems to take forever). Anyways, my app had loads of anime so I figured I could start from the top and work my way down. At the very top of the list was an anime titled 07-Ghost. I think I should start reading the synopsis of a show I'm watching first because I didn't until I was about two episodes into the anime and I had no idea what "Zaiphon" was (and its basic definition is in the summary). Anyway, Onto the Review:

As I've said before, I knew nothing about this anime before watching it except for the fact that I recognized the name.

Synopsis: Though his classmates tease him unmercifully about being an orphan and a slave, Teito Klein is the elite Barsburg Academy's star pupil. His mastery of the magical art of Zaiphon is unmatched, and, along with his best friend Mikage, he passes the final exam with flying colors. Unfortunately, after a chance encounter with the sinister Ayanami, his long repressed memories start to return, and he realizes that his life has been a lie. He is actually heir to the throne of the now subjugated Ragg Kingdom! He flees and ends up taking refuge in a church, neutral territory known as “The Zone of God.” Although he gains a trio of new allies within those sacred walls, Barsburg will stop at nothing to get him back—even if that means making fell bargains with ancient demonic powers! --Taken from Animenewsnetwork.com

The show doesn't start off particularly slow but it is slightly confusing because it starts off in a dream/memory of Teito's. I've gotten used to this because a lot of anime and manga I've been interested in has done this sort of thing so no surprises there. The art style (and some of the fashions) resemble Code Geass which I'm not surprised seeing it's the same company that did Code Geass but it doesn't matter because CG is an awesome show (though it does have many conspiracy theories revolving around it). The only thing I'm disappointed about is that some of the screenshots in 07-Ghost look like they could be placed in Code Geass and no one would be none the wiser.

Anyways, for the first 7 1/2 episodes we see Teito and Mikage's friendship and how much they are willing to give up for the sake of their friendship, Mikage risking probably not only his own life but also his families to help Teito escape after attacking Ayanami (for good reason), Teito starting to room in a church after being resqued by three bishops -the flower loving Labrador, The creepy puppet master Castor (well I think he's creepy but he's only creepy because of his dolls), and the perverted Frau who hides porn int he church library (seriously. . .)- Teito regaining his lost memory, Mikage and Teito reuniting at the church, and then their peacefull life together at the church with the occasional Kor. Sadly, all good things must end and before Mikage loses his will to Ayanami he says his last words to Teito (or at least the last words I hear because I was squealing so much).

Is that why you wanted to sleep in the same bed with Teito in episode 1? Because if so, then I totally called it.

And then Mikage becomes the ultimate puppet for Ayanami to use. Ayanami roughs up Teito so he would loose consciousness so he could be taken back to the army and what not. Great plan, except of one thing: Teito awakens and he isn't exactly happy.

This can't be good for the bad guy. . .

So Ananami (using Mikage's body) fights Teito but because of the collar Teito's power was a fraction of what it normally is because the collar was suppressing it. Teito still gets knocked around even after awakening (stupid collar) but Frau comes to the rescue -like every other time Teito ran into trouble- in his ghost form (which is a new one, I figured that our bishops represented three of the seven 'Ghosts' but I had no idea they could transform into them). Frau's ghost form reminded me of Sailor Moon but instead of school girls becoming magical girls, our boys can turn into the grim reaper (more so with Frau because he actually wields a scythe).

And then Ananami talks about well, absolutely nothing. He uses his own power to kill the body he was possessing and, in turn, killed Mikage which is sad. Teito agrees with me in the usual 'break the cutie' sort of way. I liked Mikage sense he first appeared, but that's just more proof that my favorite character always dies.

I'm sorry that Ananami is a bastard and extinguished your light. . .

To be honest I love that picture above. It's so heartbreaking and beautiful. But Mikage is dead which is sad for everyone. RIP my beloved Mikage, even though you are no longer with us I can still read fanfictions about you. . .

Anyways. . .

Teito falls into depression (I understand completely; you're best friend who happens to be 'your light' confesses his love to you, gets possessed by the enemy and then dies. I feel depressed for you little lamb). So who can cheer him up but the three little nuns, Labrador, and Castor. Unfortunately, Teito won't open the door to his room because he wants to be alone and grieve for his friend. Krau knocks the door down and starts with his 'big brother with an attitude' routine and tries to cheer Teito up whether he wants to or not. Teito gets mad and says he doesn't believe in God because God didn't save Mikage (for some reason, a lot of people blame God when their loved ones are taken from this world). Frau explains that Mikage is by his side watching over him. . .

I have no idea what this thing is but I want one. . .

The bunny thing is Mikage. . . Mikage was reborn as a freaking BUNNY THING!! I. . . . I'm speechless. . . I'm fairly certain that other people have ranted about this but. . . I think I'm in shock. . .

 Well at least it's cute. . .

So Mikage was reborn as a bunny. And he has no idea of is past life as Mikage but he searched for Teito so he could be by him again. Yeah. . . That makes absolutely no sense. AND HE'S A FREAKING BUNNY!

But Teito's sadness turns to joy and so even though none of this makes any sense it's going to be okay because Teito is no longer sad.

But, um, yeah. . . You know that collar, well apparently that makes Frau Teito's master (something that Teito isn't exactly happy about) and that makes Bunny!Mikage jealous which makes him bite Frau and while Frau was irritated he thanked Bunny!Mikage for being born again.

In Conclusion: So far, I really like this series. I feel that not a lot has happened and yet too much has. Then again the last two episodes have had a lot go down in them. In a series of 25 episodes I only have 16 more until the end. I think I'll continue to watch this series.
